NATIONAL INTERFAITH WEEK 17-23 November 2013

The Mayor of Kendal Councillor Sylvia Emmott joined SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum and SLEDP South Lakeland Equality and Diversity Partnership, for a celebration in Kendal Town Hall on Wednesday 20th November. Readings were given by the Mayor and local faith groups. Upasaka Sumedha John Gerrard read The Metta Sutta (The Discourse on Loving Kindness) in English, on behalf of BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada). Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili read The Golden Rule, on behalf of KWMMG Kendal Women’s Multifaith Meditation Group.

Rev Clive Pattinson, Chaplain of Penrith Hospital led a training session on minority faiths at Penrith hospital on Friday 22nd November. He was assisted by Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili Secretary of BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada).

SLEDP (South Lakeland Equality and Diversity Partnership) and SLIF (South Lakeland Interfaith Forum) presented Celebrating Our Faiths, on Saturday 23rd November. The meeting was held in the Westmorland shopping centre in Kendal. There were information stalls from local faith organisations and AWAZ. The organisers brought practitioners of many faiths and paths together to share their insights and practices and to learn from each other. Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili Secretary of BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) was the SLEDP Lead for this event.

On Sunday 24th November Interfaith Sunday was celebrated at Kendal Unitarian Chapel. An Interfaith Service led by Rev John Hetherington SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum Secretary, included readings and prayers from and representatives of local faith communities and faith organizations. SLIF Chair Baha’i Liz Grove and local Bahai’s sang. BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) was represented by Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili Secretary of BGKT.

November 2013

Keith Munnings (Head of Studies BCSG Buddhist Chaplaincy Support Group and Chair of BHCG Buddhist Healthcare Chaplaincy Group) visited Kendal Cumbria on 5th November.

He spoke with Rev Tim Harmer the Coordinating Chaplain for the Emergency Services in Cumbria, Simone Garnett (Community Safety CFRS Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service), Sgt Paul Melllard (Kendal Police Station), and Unitarian John Pickering (Kendal Police Station Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith). Rev Jayne Tyrer (Hospital Chaplain Westmorland General Hospital Kendal) arranged a meeting at the hospital for local Hospital Chaplains. Keith also led a public meeting for KEG Kendal Ecumenical Group, chaired by Norman Burnell, at Kendal URC United Reformed Church.

Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa (Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Oldham); Fire Officer Daryl Oprey (CFOA Lead on Equality & Diversity) and Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili (Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith to Fire Officer Daryl Oprey CFOA Lead on Equality & Diversity and CFOA E & D Group) attended the AFSA Asian Fire Service Association Conference Achieving Inclusion Through Partnership Working at GMFRS Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service training Centre and Crowne Plaza Hotel on 31st October and 1st November.

Sangha Authorized Dhamma Teachers from BGKT (Upasaka Sumedha, Upasaka Mahinda, Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili and Titus Gomes) attended Ketumati Buddhist Vihara’s Katina celebrations in Oldham on 27th October.

MANCHESTER BUDDHIST CONVENTION

The 2013 Manchester Buddhist Convention was held at Manchester University Chaplaincy on 12th October.

The Convention Session Faith and Fire was led by Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa (Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara, Oldham, and Chaplain to Manchester University); Jacquetta Gomes (Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili) (Secretary, Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada)) and (Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith to Fire Officer Daryl Oprey CFOA Lead on Equality & Diversity and CFOA E & D Group) ; Fire Officer Daryl Oprey (CFOA Chief Fire Officers Association Lead on Equality & Diversity); and Brian Rendell (Faith and Fire Treasurer and Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada)).

Venerable Piyatissa explained how mindfulness can be developed to help all the parties (firefighters and victims) to face and overcome difficult emergency situations. Fire Officer Oprey explained the national developments taking place.

Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa (born in Sri Lanka) Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Oldham led a retreat for BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) at Kendal Fire Station community room on 28th July 2013.

(As far as we are aware he led the first retreat led by a Buddhist Monk to take place in an operative Fire Station in the UK, at Kendal Fire Station in September 2011.)

Kendal Civic Celebration for Mayor’s Sunday 2013

Kendal Civic Celebration for Mayor’s Sunday led by The Worshipful the Town Mayor Councillor Sylvia Emmott on Sunday 7th July 2013, included an invitation from the Mayor to SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum and all faith groups in Kendal.

Jacquetta Gomes (Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili) represented BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada), KWMMG Kendal Womens Multifaith Meditation Group and SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum.

She walked in the Civic Procession from the Town Hall to The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity for the Civic Service. Refreshments were served in the Mayors Parlour in Kendal Town Hall afterwards.

VISIT OF REV DR MARCUS BRAYBROOKE PRESIDENT OF WCF WORLD CONGRESS OF FAITHS TO KENDAL CUMBRIA

Rev Dr Marcus Braybrooke President of the WCF World Congress of Faiths and Mrs Mary Braybrooke visited Kendal from 9th – 12th May 2013.

Interfaith Co-operation for a Better World Saturday 11th May

A day Conference on Interfaith Co-operation for a Better Worldwas led by Rev Dr Marcus Braybrooke President of the WCF World Congress of Faiths and SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum Saturday, at The Kendal Friends Meeting House (Quakers) on 11th May. Sessions included: The Baha’i Prayer for Unity, Chanting the Buddhist Discourse on Loving-Kindness, A Culture of Peace, Healing the Scars of Conflict, Interfaith Stories and Inner Peace.

Pilgimage Fundraising for Mind and Pain Concern

Tim Hagyard is walking around Britain on a long walk of pilgrimage to many holy and sacred sites around the UK, to fundraise for Mind and Pain Concern, until June 2013.

On 19th April he was joined in Kendal by the Bhikkhu [Buddhist Monk] Thanavaro from Amaravati Forest Monastery in Hertfordshire They will walk together for a month from Kendal up to Iona and then back to Edinburgh.

On 19th April Bhikkhu Thanavaro led a discussion with BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada).

Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Oldham, led a session on mindfulness, for CFRS Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service personnel and Cumbria Ambulance Service personnel, at Kendal Fire Station on 19th April.

The meeting was chaired by Suzanne Wainwright (Community Safety Coordinator at Kendal Fire Station). Attendees included Venerable Kirimetiyane Dhammika from Ketumati Buddhist Vihara, Simone Garnett (BME Advocate Kendal Fire Station) and members of BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) including Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith to Fire Officer Daryl Oprey CFOA Chief Fire Officers Association Lead on Equality & Diversity and CFOA E & D Group.
